Decades ago Western Hemisphere Analysts were predicting the coming “WATER WARS” ~ the potential for which we see spreading today.
Example: Nile River Basin (Ethiopia, Egypt, Sudan)
The long-standing dispute centers on Ethiopia’s Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), now fully operational and inaugurated in 2025.
Ethiopia views it as essential for hydro-power and development, while Egypt sees it as an existential threat to its Nile-dependent water supply (the river provides ~90% of Egypt’s freshwater). Sudan has concerns about flooding and water flow.
Tensions flared again in late 2025 with Nile flooding, which Egypt blamed on uncoordinated GERD releases.
As of early 2026, Egypt and Sudan welcomed renewed US mediation offers from President Trump to resolve sharing issues, but no final agreement exists. The dispute remains unresolved, with periodic escalations
